Our Community, Our People, Our Leaders
Here, we shine a spotlight on the individuals and leaders who inspire positive change throughout our organization’s history.
Raquel
In 2023, I emigrated to the United States alone, facing challenges with no home or support network. Through perseverance and the kindness of others, I found a job and began rebuilding my life. My English skills helped me adapt, but I knew I needed to improve further, so I enrolled in an Academic and Business English program at Westchester Community College.
A key moment in my journey was deciding to earn my GED certificate, which is essential for my academic and professional goals. Despite the challenges of financial sacrifices and long walks to classes at The Community Resource Center and Southern Westchester BOCES, I remained committed to earning this qualification. The GED not only opened doors for further education but also became a symbol of my determination. Growing up in a poor, unstable town in Peru shaped my empathy and resilience, which I continue to apply in my volunteer work with CRC, supporting ESL classes and community events.
Thanks to CRC, I received a laptop that enhanced my studies and allowed me to take additional certifications. In 2025, I plan to start the Paralegal program at Westchester Community College to become an immigration attorney to help others seeking new opportunities.
My journey has required sacrifices but has taught me perseverance and discipline. I am grateful for my support and hope my story inspires others to pursue their dreams.
Ignacio
“My name is Ignacio. I came to the United States in 2002 and started a beautiful family. One of my personal goals is to learn English and become proficient in this language, so I enrolled in English as A Second Language classes at CRC. I also took the OSHA 30-Hour Training with CRC because I hope to own a construction company one day, so I can save money and purchase my dream home for my family. With CRC by my side, I know that all my dreams will come true.”
Gabriela
“My name is Gabriela, I was born in Guadalajara Jalisco México. I just graduated as Clinical Medical Assistant and I am certified by the National Healthcare Association.
I want to first give thanks to God, my family, Southern Westchester BOCES and to my professors Tonia Wright and José Bohorquez for helping me grow, for the opportunity that they gave me, for being a fundamental part in my academic growth and for their dedication and patience. I enrolled in English classes, obtained my GED diploma and am also certified as a ServSafe food handler. Thank you to everyone for giving me the tools and directing me to a promising future.
Receive my greetings and my most sincere thanks.”
Martha
Martha has been a DACA recipient for several years. As DACA recipient, she faced uncertainty due to the court’s legal challenges to the constitutionality of the program and the limited opportunities that DACA status provides. Martha didn’t give up pursuing her dreams despite those challenges and limitations. She dreamed of owning her Beauty salon, and although this project wouldn’t be easy, she was determined to make it happen and succeed.
With a work authorization, Martha enrolled in beauty school and obtained her cosmetology license. After gaining the necessary skills and saving money, she opened her beauty in Mamaroneck. She named it “DG Brow and Beauty Bar.”
At first, the business was slow, but Martha’s talent and passion shone through. She built a loyal customer base through her exceptional styling and commitment to customer satisfaction. Word of mouth began to spread, and soon, her salon was booked weeks in advance.
Martha’s beauty salon has become a thriving business and a symbol of hope and empowerment for her. Thanks to our Community Justice Program, she has continued to renew her DACA and work authorization. Martha has inspired others to pursue their dreams despite their challenges as DACA recipients.
Martha’s story is a testament to the power of determination, hard work, and the opportunities that DACA and work authorization can provide. She turned her dream into a thriving business, positively impacting her life and our community while giving hope to countless others in similar circumstances.
